Welcome…

It is a great pleasure to welcome you to the University of Southampton, Faculty of Social, Human and Mathematical Sciences and the BSc Criminology and Psychology programme.

This is the Undergraduate Handbook for students studying the BSc in Criminology and Psychology who started in 2015/16 or before. If you started your degree in 2016/2017 or after, please click here for the appropriate handbook.

This is your Undergraduate Handbook for the BSc in Criminology and Psychology. The information contained in the handbook has been designed to complement the information provided in the Social Sciences Undergraduate Handbook and your Module Course pages on Blackboard (your staff-student portal). It aims to provide you with key information relating to your degree and your three years of study. It has been designed to give you an overview of the procedures, regulations and information sources that you will need to know. The programme is administered within Social Sciences: Sociology, Social Policy & Criminology (SSPC). However, the handbook reflects on the procedures and regulations in both SSPC and the Psychology Academic Unit. It is important that you familiarise yourself with the information that it contains and that you explore the contents of the handbook as a whole

Our aim is to promote Criminological Psychology as an interdisciplinary subject for research and practical application. As a student on the BSc Criminology and Psychology programme, you will combine the study of criminology with the study of psychology, explore and grasp the complementary nature of the two subjects (whose practitioners increasingly share ideas, approached and research interests) and develop your interest in closely-related disciplines. We will provide you with the skills to research and analyse the complexities of criminal behaviour, the social responses to crim and the workings of the criminal justice system.

British Psychological Society (BPS) Accreditation

The BSc Criminology and Psychology degree at the University of Southampton meets the requirements of the British Psychological Society (BPS) for producing graduates who are eligible to apply for the Graduate Basis for Chartered Membership (GBC), a prerequisite for further professional training accredited by the BPS. The programme achieves this goal by assuring both the quality and content of the individual units. For information about the British Psychological Society (BPS), and to see if you are eligible to apply for the GBC, please click here.
