Appendix 1 – Components and Assessment Requirements of all Units of Competence

The sixteen core units of competence are defined in terms of five broad areas: generic professional, psychological interventions, research, consultancy and teaching & training. They are divided into a total of 50 specific components. The units further define each of these components in terms of what a health psychologist must be able to do in order to demonstrate the specified competence. Together, these competencies encompass the requirements of both the HCPC Standards of Proficiency for Practitioner (Health) Psychologists, and Stage 2 of the BPS Qualification in Health Psychology.

Evidence for satisfactory completion of the competences will include the Supervision Plan, Practice Diary, Supervision Logs, Records of Completion and Supporting Evidence. Examiners will consider the candidate’s evidence in relation to the 50 components of competence. It is useful, therefore, for candidates to focus on the 50 components of competence from the outset of their supervised practice. The components are listed by unit above.
