Year Three Modules
Contents
You will take SIX “OPTION” MODULES in your third year of study – three in Semester One and three in Semester Two. You MUST choose to take three Education modules and three Psychology modules across the year. These modules are worth 15 credits each (or 15 CATS points*).
In addition, you MUST undertake a “core” Empirical Project across the whole year. This can be in either Education or Psychology. If you choose to be supervised for an Empirical Project in Education, you will take one module (EDUC3027 Dissertation) worth 30 credits (or 30 CATS points**) throughout the whole academic year. If you choose Psychology, your Empirical Project will be divided into two 15 credit modules – the PSYC3003 Literature Review taken in Semester One and the PSYC3005 Research Paper in Semester Two.
BPS Accreditation Criteria
If you want to qualify for British Psychological Society (BPS) accreditation, TWO of your optional module choices MUST become “core”.
For BPS accreditation, you MUST elect to take:
- EDUC3022 Advanced Research Methods as a Semester One module
- PSYC3002 Current Issues in Clinical Psychology as a Semester Two module
All of your options are outlined below. Please click on ‘Module Names’ listed below for an outline of the module(s) and assessment procedures. Specific details will be provided by Individual Module Coordinators when you begin your module.
Guidelines on signing up to option modules can be found here.

* Credit Accumulation and Transfer Scheme (CATS) suggests that a 15 credit course equates to 150 study hours (including both contact time and self-study).
** CATS suggests that a 30 credit course equates to 300 study hours (including both contact time and self-study).
† This module is an “option” module because you can choose whether you want to take it, or not, from a list of “option” module choices. However, if you choose to take the module it becomes “core”, as you must pass it at a minimum of 40% in order to graduate. This is in-line with the Psychology Academic Unit’s module regulations that are in place for their BSc Psychology programme.
Further support on Year Three option module choices
You must choose to take six option modules in Year Three. Both the Southampton Education School and Psychology Academic Unit provide you with support and information that is designed so you can make the best possible choice of option modules in Year Three. For example, in Year Two, Semester Two, Education arrange an Option Module Event for second year students to attend to hear more information about the School’s third year modules. In the same Semester, Psychology provide second year students with a Third Year Options booklet and organise a student-to-student Module Fair, to help you to decide the third year modules that you would like to take.
