Suspensions, Transfers and Withdrawals

If you are considering suspending, transferring or withdrawing from your studies, we recommend that you should ALWAYS discuss this with your Personal Academic Tutor before you go ahead with your decision. Alternatively, you can always discuss your options with Directors of Student Support (contactable on psy-support-ug@soton.ac.uk) or the University’s Student Support team.

Suspending your studies

Should you feel that you need to take some time out from your studies, known as interrupting your studies, you should first discuss this with your Personal Academic Tutor.  A Request to Suspend Studies Form should be obtained, completed and returned to the Student Office. Please note that, if you wish, you can suspend your studies in order to undertake an internship or period of industrial training outside of normal vacation time.  Further information can be found in the General Regulations – Transfer, Suspension, Withdrawal and Termination.

Transferring your studies

Should you feel that you would like to transfer your studies to a different School or Faculty in the University, you should first discuss this with your Personal Academic Tutor. After this, you should visit your Student Office to obtain, complete and return an ‘Change of Degree Registration Form – Intra-Faculty  form or ‘Outer_Faculty_Transfer_Form.

Approval will need to be obtained from your current and prospective School and/or Faculty before the transfer goes ahead. We cannot guarantee that you will be able to transfer your studies (for example, you may be prevented from transferring if the programme you would like to transfer to is full).

Withdrawing from your studies

If you no longer wish to continue with your studies, you should first discuss this with your Personal Academic Tutor. If you decide to withdraw, a Withdrawal Notification Form should be obtained, completed and returned to the Student Office.  Further information can be found in the General Regulations – Transfer, Suspension, Withdrawal and Termination. The Students’ Union Advice Centre has developed a Guide for students.
