About Me

Hi, my name’s Liam, and for the next year or so I will be studying at Universit√† degli Studi di Padova, Italy.

I am studying Economics & Philosophy at Southampton, and this year in Padova serves as the third year of a four year degree. This blog is primarily to keep track of my experiences during my time abroad, not just the academic side of things – I will also be writing about fencing (the sport!) in Italy, differences between Britain and Italy, travel, and any other (mis)adventures I may find myself on.

I chose to study in Italy for a few reasons:

  1. I want to learn the language well enough to have a conversation longer than about three sentences with my family who live just outside of Rome. My great grandfather was Italian, and I am interested in finding out more about my history and where my family has come from.
  2. I also came here to improve my fencing. Italy is world renowned for being one of the best countries in the world at this sport, and I have an amazing club just a short journey away from where I am staying, and an opportunity to learn from two former Olympians.
  3. The country is beautiful – the landscape, the architecture, the food, the weather, the people – the list goes on. I cannot think of a better place to spend my year abroad, and am fortunate enough to have the opportunity to study at one of the oldest universities in Europe.

I aim to post around once a month for the duration of my stay, making a minimum of 10 posts altogether. There is one final assessment at the end of the academic year where I will reflect on the overall experience I have had, something I also want to share with you. I hope that at least some of what I write about here is of use to you and that you enjoy the blog!

Thanks,

Liam
