Matthew Posner, Ph.D.

I work at the Optoelectronics Research Centre, University of Southampton, UK, in the development of integrated photonics components. I completed my Ph.D. in December 2017 and graduated with a First Class MEng Degree in Electronic Engineering from the University of Southampton in 2013.

My research focuses on the development of silica-based optical integrated circuits for applications in telecommunications, sensing and quantum technologies. I am trained in cleanroom and laser fabrication processes,  optoelectronics integration and fibre and free space optical characterisation methods. I spend my days designing & building devices (like the chip pictured below, courtersy of Paolo Mennea), and using lasers, optical fibres and & optical measurement systems to verify how they perform. My line managers are Dr. Corin Gawith and Dr. James C. Gates in the group of Prof. Peter G. R. Smith.

I am an alumni of the University of Southampton’s Optics and Photonics Society, which is comprised of an OSA, SPIE and IEEE Photonics Society student chapter. I mentor and support current officers. I am passionate about engaging with the public and students to share my knowledge on light sciences and light-based technologies, aka Photonics. I have received institutional and national awards for my work in Outreach & Public Engagement for developing activities to teach and engage the general public and school students in photonics and electronics.

I am a member of the IEEE Photonics Society, SPIE, OSA and the IOP. I am also an honorary lifetime member of the Southampton University Road Cycling Club. In my spare time I cycle, climb and go ski touring and mountaineering.
