Missing an Examination

A zero mark will be automatically awarded for any missed examination.

However, if you miss an examination due to an exceptional circumstance (for example, a sudden serious illness or an unexpected family difficulty), then you may be permitted to resit that examination. In this case, you should, as promptly as possible, inform your Student Office (Email: SSPC.StudentOffice@soton.ac.uk) about your special circumstance. Your Student Office will provide you with relevant forms that need to be completed and will inform you of any documentation that you may need to supply in support of your circumstance, and which you must supply AS SOON AS YOU CAN. If the Special Considerations Board, who will later consider your case, is satisfied, you will then be permitted to resit the missed examination in due course, normally during the next supplementary examination period after the missed examination (for example, August/September after May/June).

Invalid excuses for missing an examination include the following:

  • Forgetting about it
  • Misreading the timetable
  • Oversleeping
  • Wearing a defective watch.

Personal or family holidays – including pre-booked holidays and sport events – are also invalid excuses for missing examinations, whether those examinations take place during term time (for example, mid-term quizzes), or during standard examination periods. Such examinations cannot be rescheduled.

It is your responsibility to ensure that you are constantly available throughout term time and throughout examination periods to sit such examinations.

PLEASE NOTE: You will also not be permitted to sit an examination if you arrive at the relevant venue too long after the specified admission time (for example, usually 30 minutes after the admission time for a centrally scheduled examination, or any period specified by the Academic Unit or Module Coordinator for a mid-semester examination. The time may also vary for CAA exams). For further information please click here.
