Showcase countdown: How we are generating the stars of tomorrow

We are delighted to welcome the incoming Dean of Medicine at the University of Southampton Professor Diana Eccles to this year’s LifeLab Showcase.

Professor Eccles takes up her new post in September but before that she has the honour of closing our Showcase event, which takes place tomorrow.

We are expecting more than 30 guests from across the University along with representatives University Hospital Southampton, partner organisations, charities who support us and some of our volunteers who give up their time to inspire our students with their work.

On top of that we will be welcoming the stars of the show – our students, their teachers and parents.

Along with celebrating our achievements over the past year, there will also be a presentation of certificates before inviting guests to vote for their favourite poster presentation from a number that have been produced by students who have visited LifeLab. Refreshments will also be served.

Professor Eccles will then be invited to close the event which runs from 4pm to 6.30pm tomorrow at LifeLabdianasmall. We asked her what her impressions were of the project and how she was looking forward to being part of the event.

She said: “Lifelab makes me think about a famous quote, slightly adapted ‘Give me a child at an impressionable age and they are mine for life’.

“Teaching school children about what a healthy lifestyle means and why adopting a healthy lifestyle will benefit them and the whole population is so important there should be a life lab in every school.

“The students coming through LifeLab, part of the University of Southampton, find out not only about the science behind healthy living but also about potential careers in the fields of science and medicine.

“We are proud to be generating the stars of tomorrow.”

We will be posting on Twitter throughout the event, follow #LifeLabShowcase
