Approach to Learning

You will participate in theory- practice linked teaching delivered by specialists within the Department of Psychology and practitioners in the field of Clinical Psychology. More than half the teaching is provided by external teachers who give teaching linked to their professional practice within the NHS, the voluntary or private sector,  in relation to client / patient groups and related service provision. Teaching is mainly in the form of half day or full day workshops, with opportunities for you to develop clinical skills via small group activity (practice, rehearsal) and related discussion and feedback. You are expected to arrange a voluntary placement in a related field to provide practical experience relevant to classroom discussions and assignments. Students are seen as adult learners and teaching approaches used reflect this.

All of our modules will help you to develop your transferable skills, your research skills and your psychological skills. We aim for all our students to reach a high level of critical thinking and evidence – based knowledge, as the core inputs for their future careers.

There is a strong expectation that students will undertake self-directed learning to enhance and extend knowledge gained in teaching.  For every one hour of face-to-face contact it is expected that  will you undertake four hours of private study.
