Role of Personal Tutor

In accordance with General Medical Council (GMC) recommendations, the Faculty of Medicine runs a system of Personal Performance Development Review (PPDR) for medical students.

Your tutee(s), with the exception of Final Year students, are required to undertake a PPDR with you between now and the 29th May 2020.  (By 17th July 2020 for BM4 Y2s and BM(EU) Y3s.) Your tutees have been advised to contact you to schedule a meeting during this period in order that you can undertake this process.

Please read the Guidelines for Tutors (below) before the PPDR takes place. Copies of the PPDR and PDP forms can be found on lefthand side of  home page under “useful documents” Your tutees should complete the first part of the PPDR form and make available some evidence and reflections on eFolio in advance of their meeting with you.  The remainder of the form should be completed at the meeting.  Both parties should keep a copy of the completed form.

In addition, the Personal Development Plan form should be completed and students have been asked to upload this to their eFolio as evidence of the PPDR having taken place by the deadline of 29th May 2020.

It is suggested that you review your tutee’s eFolio before they attend their PPDR meeting. You may wish to discuss with them eFolio completion (or lack of it) and/or the reflections they have uploaded. You’re not expected to assess anything but rather to use eFolio as a tool to review your tutee’s progress and have a meaningful discussion. It is a requirement for all medical students (except Final Year) to have a yearly appraisal and failure to do so in two consecutive years will be viewed as a professionalism issue.

To support you in your role as a Personal Academic Tutor the Faculty of Medicine has developed an on-line training module in MEDUSA (Medical Education Development Unit Staff Access). To access the module please visit www.southampton.ac.uk/medusa. Please direct any queries about the PPDR process to Kam Kaur-Bicchu (fmed-studentoffice@soton.ac.uk) or Tel: 023 8059 5571.
